Predictive vs Power Dialing: Which Fits Your Campaign?

Predictive vs Power Dialing: Which Fits Your Campaign?

Every outbound team eventually asks the same question: should we run predictive or power dialing? The honest answer is that it depends on two numbers — how many agents you have, and how much each contact is worth.

How power dialing works

Power dialing places a fixed number of calls per available agent, usually one at a time or a small ratio like 1.5:1. When an agent frees up, the system dials the next record. There is no forecasting involved, which makes the behaviour predictable and the abandon rate close to zero.

That predictability is exactly why power dialing suits small teams. With fewer than about eight agents, a predictive algorithm does not have enough statistical signal to forecast reliably, and it will either over-dial and abandon calls or under-dial and waste the same idle time you were trying to remove.

How predictive dialing works

A predictive engine continuously measures answer rate, average handle time and agent availability, then paces outbound calls so a connected human is waiting the moment a seat opens. It deliberately dials more numbers than it has free agents, betting on the proportion that will not answer.

That bet is where the throughput comes from — and where the risk lives. Pace too aggressively and you abandon calls, which damages both your compliance position and your brand.

Choosing between them

Use power dialing when:

  • You run fewer than roughly eight to ten concurrent agents
  • Each contact is high-value and a dropped call is expensive
  • You operate in a market with strict abandon-rate rules
  • Your list quality is inconsistent and answer rates swing hard

Use predictive dialing when:

  • You have ten or more agents dialing the same campaign
  • Your list is large enough that raw contact volume drives results
  • Answer rates are stable enough to forecast
  • Agent idle time is your primary cost problem

The middle ground most teams miss

Progressive and preview dialing sit between the two. Preview mode shows the agent the record before connecting, which matters enormously in collections, B2B sales and any conversation where walking in cold costs you the deal. You trade some throughput for a materially better conversation.

A well-run operation often uses all of them: predictive for top-of-funnel volume campaigns, preview for high-value follow-ups, and power for anything compliance-sensitive.

Tune the pacing, not just the mode

Whichever mode you pick, the settings that actually move the needle are the abandon-rate cap, the answering machine detection sensitivity, and the ring timeout. Set the abandon cap to your regulatory limit with headroom to spare, tune AMD until you stop losing live answers to false positives, and keep ring timeouts short enough that agents are not paid to listen to ringtones.

Measure talk time per agent hour rather than calls per hour. Calls per hour rewards dialing at people; talk time rewards actually reaching them.
